Comic strips and my zine

20160917_184741-01

Character sketches of myself and my brother.

I have been coming up with ideas for comics recently.  The first one is a fan comic about Monster Hunter and features me and my brother.  The sketch above are characters based on us with neutral faces.  I’m going to draw them from different angles with different expressions this week.

Monster Hunter fan comic ideas.

This is a page of my initial idea.  I like to read manga (One Punch Man, My Hero Academia, Monster Hunter Flash Hunter, Gon, Fairy Tail..) and comics and comic strips like Peanuts, Garfield, Bone, and Calvin and Hobbes.  I started writing my own comic strips a few years ago.

Journey fan comic sketch.

A lot of my comics are based on video games I like.  This one is based on Journey which I played last week (free via Playstation Plus!).

Back in 2014 me and my brother created the first issue of our zine MACS (Magazine of Awesome Cool Stuff..)

The Misadventures of Link by midnakit (KitBIT), 2014

The zine included several of my comic strips at the time including ‘The Misadventures of Link’ which followed Link from the Zelda games.

It also featured my comic strip The Odd Days which was inspired by the asdf movies on Youtube by Tom Ska .  My versions really didn’t make a lot of sense.

Art Cards

Midnakit’s hand drawn art cards

Forgot to add these to my last post.  More of my hand drawn art cards that I hand out to interesting people I meet.  The top two are card designs I’ve used before, the bottom is new – Ive drawn her before in a different pose and called her Candy Girl then, but only as a temporary name, I’m still learning who she really is!  All characters are my own, coloured with ProMarkers.

Sketches from the past fortnight..

I’ve had a really busy couple of weeks.  I’ve been to the beach twice, done Laser Tag, caught up with friends who have finished school for the year, gone to a Minecraft LAN day at ThinqTanq, applied for a place on the National Art & Design Saturday Club at PCA, read Am I Normal Yet? by Holly Bourne, went to a ‘Titanic’ workshop at the STEM centre at City College Plymouth, went to the Plymouth Young Contemporary Open at Radiant and Peninsula galleries, had my second skateboarding lesson at Prime (and met Stefani Nurding!), took part in the most recent (and final!) Splatfest (Team Callie!), and I went to see Ghostbusters at the Reel!

All that on top of my usual weekly activities.. so I haven’t had time to update my blog with daily sketches or anything else!  This post is a giant catch up of all my favourite sketches that I’ve done in the past fortnight.

Fanart inspired by The Colour Catchers, Gutsie by Emma Baker, Attack on Titan, The Last of Us, My Hero Academia, and One Punch Man

This page is full of fanart, apart from the character in the welder’s mask which is my own.  As well as anime and manga inspired fanart, I’ve done my own versions of Alice Kensington’s “Colour Catchers” (Rainbowjam patreon) and Emma Baker’s “Gutsie” (Ghoulkiss patreon).  Both of these amazing artists recently graduated from Plymouth College of Art so please support them and share their work if you can!

Today’s Sketch

20160710_150235-1

This is a sketch of a character I designed today.

Her name is Berry and she is 17 years old.  She loves to fix, mess around with and make mechanical objects, and wants to be a mechanic when she’s older.  She loves fruit and her favourite are apples.

Roses

I created this with Manga Studio 5, which I got for my birthday a few months ago.  The software is similar to Photoshop except it just has tools for drawing and is easier to use.

The idea for this picture came from a card I drew a while ago (on my post Art cards from May).

Today’s Sketch

20160630_210353-1.jpg

This is a new character I drew today. I was thinking of the outfits in anime and manga and designed my own 🙂

I imagine she’s a peppy girl who is always cheerful and chatty.  She is cheeky and full of puns.  She cheats at cards but doesn’t mind if you catch her.  She’s learning to play ukelele and knit, but isn’t great at ether of them.  She has five cats and pretends they’re dinosaurs.  She often sneaks out of her chores to cause mischief.  She plays drums in a band with her friends, and hopes they’ll make a lot of money one day.

Watercolour drawings

I’ve just finished my sketch of Link from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.  I watched gameplay videos of it at E3 online and I HAD to draw a picture:

Link Watercolour

I used Kuretake Mangaka fineliners and Sakura Koi watercolours.  Here is a picture of my watercolour kit:

From left: Seawhite A5 Sketchbook, Sakura Koi Pocket Field Sketch Box, Uni Kura Toga pencils, Pentel Water Brush, Sakura White Gelly Roll pen, Zig Millennium 005, Zig Mangaka pens, Sakura Pigma brush pen, Tombow Spray Mister, Staedtler Mars plastic eraser, Koh-I-Noor Kneadable Eraser

I’ve had my Koi sketch box since early May and my Seawhite sketchbook for a fortnight and got them both from The Art Side.   Some of the other things here I got for my birthday, and some of them have been in my art kit for a long time.  I have three Kuru Toga pencils, all with different leads in them.  My silver one is HB and my most used pencil.  The green holds 4B lead and I have a blue one (not pictured) which holds non-photocopy blue lead.  I like to use water brushes because they are easier to take out and about.  I use the spray mister to make my paints damp before I use them.  The white gelly roll pen is great for highlights and covering mistakes so I have it with me constantly.  I have a wide variety of black fineliners and brush pens and at the moment I prefer using small fineliners so I can be really detailed in my work, and i’ve been testing different types of crosshatching with them.  I’ve also been learning to use dip pens and ink.

I’ve only been working in watercolour for the past two months and I think it’s really fun to do.  It’s slightly harder to work in than pencils and pens because you need to be careful about how much water you put on the paper.  Here are some examples of my work so far:

Ellie and Joel from The Last Of Us

Ellie and Joel from The Last Of Us

I just completed The Last Of Us (on easy..) and have been drawing Ellie and Joel a lot.

Girl and Fox

Girl and Fox

I invented the girl.  I sketched the fox on a visit to Delamore House’s annual arts exhibition at the end of May.  The original is a giant sculpture made from recycled materials (car bumpers!) by Ptolomy Elrington.

Ellie in Winter

Ellie in Winter

Another picture of Ellie.  I worked on this last week.  She is a really fun character to draw.
